What covers do hospitality businesses need?

Depending on the type of hospitality business you're running, pick from a few mandatory covers — including public liability — then build your package from there from our suite of covers.

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance is a common cover for businesses that involve contact with members of the public.

Whether it's a slip on a spilled drink, a splash of oil from a deep fat fryer or a tumble from outdoor play equipment, everyday moments can sometimes lead to unexpected accidents.

Public liability insurance is designed to cover claims made against you by members of the public for property damage and accidental bodily injury, illness, disease or even death as a result of your work.

Employers' liability insurance

Employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement for most employers in the UK. If you have staff — whether part-time, full-time, permanent, temporary or apprentices — you may have a legal obligation to have this insurance and have an employers' liability insurance certificate to prove it.

Not having it can result in a fine of up to £2,500 per day for each uninsured day.

Our employers' liability cover offers a £10 million limit as standard. It also includes 50 days’ cover for temporary employees, who do not need to be registered with us, each year.

Portable business equipment cover

From everyday essentials to specialist kit, all the equipment you need to perform your job could be protected with our portable business equipment insurance.

Our specialist business equipment insurance could give you peace of mind, knowing the items you rely on are covered for damage, loss and theft.

Buildings, contents and stock cover

Whether your own the building or rent it, we can offer cover to suit. From buildings insurance with adjustable limits if own the building to tenants' improvements if you lease and have made changes to the space.

If you're looking for cover for your furniture, food or fences for damage from fire, flood or water ingress, you may want to consider business contents insurance.

Some hospitality industry policies will require a £2,500 minimum policy for both contents and stock.

Business interruption insurance

Business interruption insurance is designed to cover the loss of income you suffer following an unexpected event causing downtime to your trading.

We will also pay for the additional costs you face to get your business up and running again. This is only available with buildings, contents or stock cover.

Loss of licence

Loss of licence cover is designed to protects businesses that serve booze from financial losses if your alcohol licence is suspended, withdrawn or forfitted. It can also cover expenses related to appealing or reinstating your licence.

Terrorism insurance

If your premises is damaged by an act of terrorism, you may also be covered under this policy.

Once you've completed a quote, you'll be able to view a summary of cover. Please always refer to your policy documents for full details around exclusions, terms and limits of your customised cover. Read our guide to understanding your policy documents.

Hospitality claims examples

Insurance claims are different for every type of trade, but here are a few examples of the types of claims that could involve legal or compensation costs and, as always, terms, conditions and exclusions apply:

An allergic reaction

A customer has an allergic reaction to their food, even though the allergens are listed on the menu.

A loose carpet

An employee is walking back to the front desk and trips over a loose piece of carpet, breaking their arm.

A slippery floor

A customer in your pub slips on a wet floor and injures themselves, even though you put a wet floor sign down.

Stolen equipment

After an event you’ve hosted, you notice that some of your specialist equipment is missing, possibly stolen.

How do claims work?

1

You make a claim

Contact us by email at claims@gosuperscript.com, by 24/7 freephone on 0800 772 3059 or by logging in to your customer portal.

We'll ask you for some details about your claim, including a crime reference number (if applicable), the date of loss or claim made against you, type of claim and its detailed description.

In the portal, you can also attach any relevant supporting documentation like proof of loss, proof of purchase, a letter of demand or a statement of claim.

2

We'll get on the case

Once submitted, your claim will be assessed by our experts.

If the claim is large, we may need more information from you. If it's small, however, our team may be able to settle it within a couple of days (or hours, in some cases).

Either way, we'll keep you regularly updated and you'll be able to see the status of your claim on our customer portal.

3

Your claim is settled

After it's been assessed, we'll let you know if your claim has been successful or not.

If items have been lost, stolen or damaged, we might arrange for the items to be replaced or make a payment to you.

If you’re liable for something we will assist you with legal support.

Hospitablity insurance FAQs

What hospitality businesses do you cover?

We can cover a wide range of hospitality businesses.

If you can’t see your company type as an option when you get a quote, please don’t hesitate to contact our customer success team via chat, email or phone — we may be able to offer you cover!

Do I need to tell you each time I get a new employee?

If you have employers' liability insurance with us, you will need to let us know each time you get a new permanent employee.

For temporary workers, however, we’ll automatically cover you for up to 50 days in any one period of insurance.

What will affect the cost of my insurance?

The cost of your cover will vary depending on the work you carry out.

Businesses that could more easily cause harm to the public present more risk and a bigger payout in the event of a claim. This typically means the cost of your insurance will be higher than it would be to cover a lower work, or less valuable equipment.

What excess would I need to pay?

This will vary depending on the nature of your claim and what it says in your policy documents. For example, the excess on a public liability claim could be £250.

Always check your policy documents for full details around exclusions, terms and limits of your customised cover.

The only cover that is a legal requirement is employers' liability insurance, for most businesses with employees.

You may want to consider insurance for other reasons, however. For example, you may decide that the risk of a claim against you is too high a price to pay, not to insure.
